The female part of a flower, the part that can make seeds. If you look into a flower, the pistil usually sits in the middle. The sticky top is where lands; a thin neck runs down from that top; at the bottom is the ovary, which can grow into fruit and hold the seeds. Some flowers have one pistil; some have several. Around it you often see the , which hold the — those are the male parts. Though actually, textbooks draw a tidy “one pistil in the centre” picture, but real flowers are messier: a tulip, a lily, and a rose are not built the same way, and some plants keep male and female parts in different blooms. You need this word in biology class. In ordinary talk people just say the middle of the flower. It has nothing to do with a pistol, the gun, even though the two words look close on the page.

組成Borrowed from French pistil. It is a doublet of pestle and of Latin pistillum — the same older word in different clothes. The flower part got the name because people thought it looked a bit like a small pestle, the tool you grind with.
