A pipit is a small singing bird, usually brown or grey, with thin streaks on its back and chest. It is not a bright bird. If you see a little brown bird walking on grass or along a path, with a thin beak and a quiet, thin call, it may well be a pipit. There are many kinds; the meadow pipit is a common one in open country in Britain. They like fields, moors, and shores more than deep forest. They sit in the same bird family as wagtails, though actually they look much plainer and do not flash a long tail. You will meet this word in bird books and nature lists far more than in everyday talk.
