1. 1

A pipit is a small singing bird, usually brown or grey, with thin streaks on its back and chest. It is not a bright bird. If you see a little brown bird walking on grass or along a path, with a thin and a quiet, thin call, it may well be a pipit. There are many kinds; the meadow pipit is a common one in open country in Britain. They like fields, moors, and shores more than deep forest. They sit in the same bird family as , though actually they look much plainer and do not flash a long tail. You will meet this word in bird books and nature lists far more than in everyday talk.
