A pinto is a horse whose coat is not one colour. You see big, uneven patches of white and another colour — often brown or black — as if someone had splashed paint on the horse. It is a pattern, not a breed: any kind of horse can be a pinto if it is marked this way. The word is common in North America, among riders and in Western films. In Britain people more often say piebald when the patches are black and white, and skewbald when white meets another colour; pinto does not mind which colours, only that the horse looks mottled. People also call a beige bean with brown mottles a pinto bean, because it looks splashed in the same way — same picture, stretched to food.
