The Pinta was one of the three ships that sailed with Christopher Columbus from Spain in 1492. The other two were the Niña and the Santa María. Pinta was a light sailing ship, and in the usual school story it was the fastest of the three. English keeps the Spanish name and it with a capital P, because it is a name, not a type of ship. People say “the Pinta” the way they say “the Titanic”: one famous ship, one voyage everyone has heard of. In the familiar telling, a sailor on the Pinta was the first to shout that he could see land. In Spanish the ship is La Pinta.
