    A pinny is a British, word for a pinafore in the “protect your clothes” sense: the apron you pull on over a dress or shirt so cooking, painting, or washing-up does not spoil what you have on. Parents in Britain still say “put your pinny on.” Schoolchildren also get coloured pinnies — tops pulled over a shirt so two teams can tell each other apart. The word feels spoken and family-like, not office-like. In American English people usually just say apron.
