Pink-collar names jobs that often pay rather little and that, for a long time, were done mainly by women — office work, shops, restaurants, care work. People also call the workers themselves pink-collar. The phrase was built to sit beside blue-collar (factory and ) and white-collar (office and professional jobs). Pink was chosen because people treated pink as a “women’s” colour, the match for blue as a “men’s” colour; pink in service jobs may have helped the name stick. Though actually, many speakers now find the label old-fashioned or unfair, because it ties work to gender. You still meet it in news when someone is talking about pay and whose work is valued.
