A pinhole is a hole so small it looks as if a pin made it — a of light through paper, a tiny leak, a little hole in a leaf. You do not actually need a pin; any very small hole can be called a pinhole. Photographers talk about a pinhole camera: a dark box with only a pinhole to let light in, which can still make a picture. The word stays physical and plain, not fancy.
