Pierced describes something that had a hole made through it by something sharp — "pierced ears" means holes were made for ; "pierced by an arrow" means an arrow went through. It's also used for sound or feelings cutting through sharply — "a scream pierced the silence" means it cut sharply and suddenly through the quiet.
