1. 1

A piebald animal has large black and white areas on its body, like the colours of a magpie. You hear it most about horses, and sometimes about other animals. The white parts are not tiny spots; they are big, clear patches. Horse people may keep a second word, skewbald, for brown-and-white rather than black-and-white, though many speakers just say piebald for any big two-colour coat, and that is a little loose. It is a farm and horse word, a bit old; in easy talk people often say “black and white.” As a noun, a piebald can mean the animal itself. It has nothing to do with pies you eat, and nothing to do with being drunk (that is pie-eyed). Bald here is not “no hair on the head.”
