To piddle is a soft, slightly childish way to say you pass water from the body — to wee, to pee. Parents say it to small children (“Do you need to piddle?”), and people say it of dogs and cats (“The puppy piddled on the rug”). Grown-ups talking about themselves usually say pee or wee, or a more careful word; piddle sounds little-kid or a bit cute, and it takes the sharpness out of a body word. The noun piddle can mean the wee itself, though that is less common. Though actually there is another everyday use that has nothing to do with toilets: to piddle about, or piddle around, is to spend time on small, not-very-useful jobs instead of the real one. That “tiny and not important” feeling is also where piddling comes from. Piddle is mild, home language; it is not rude in the strong way piss is.

People compare it with old German words for picking at food or doing a tiny job; it may perhaps have grown from paw or put plus -le, a little ending for doing something over and over.
