A picker is a person, or a machine, that picks fruit or vegetables — takes them off the plant at harvest. In an orchard you will hear apple pickers; in a field, strawberry pickers. The machine kind does the same job with fewer hands. The word is simply the verb pick plus the ending that means “the one who does it.” Though actually, English has stretched picker. In a warehouse, a picker may walk the aisles and pick goods off shelves for orders. That is the same verb in a different workplace. This sense, though, is the farm one: harvest, not shopping lists.
