A pick-me-up is a drink or a bit of medicine that lifts you when you feel flat — tired, low, or both. Coffee is the everyday one. An energy drink is a louder one. Older people might mean a tonic, or even a small strong drink. The name is almost a little sentence: it picks me up, like a hand under your elbow. Though actually, people stretch it a lot. A walk, a song, or a kind message can all be called a pick-me-up, even though this sense starts with drink or medicine. It is informal and friendly, not a doctor's word, and it names a thing, not an action you do to another person.
