A piccolo is a small flute. You hold it to the side and blow across a hole, like a flute, but it is shorter, so the notes come out higher and brighter. In an orchestra it often plays the highest line, a sound that can cut through many other instruments. Players treat it as its own instrument, not a toy flute: it is hard to play well because it is so small and so high. The word is simply Italian for 'small.' In English, piccolo by itself almost always means this instrument. Though actually, you may also see piccolo on a drinks list for a very small bottle — that is the same Italian word, but not this sense.
