1. 1

In biology, a very big group of living things. Scientists sort life in steps: kingdom, then phylum, then class, and so on. Animals with a backbone sit in one phylum; insects sit in another. You meet this word in science class, not in the street. Language people also use phylum for a very big group of languages that may share a far-back origin, though they argue more about those groups than do. Though actually, older plant books sometimes said division instead of phylum; many scientists now say phylum for plants too. The plural is phyla.
