If a machine goes phut, it suddenly stops working completely — the fridge, the radio, the , all at once. That “go phut” use is mainly British and informal; you would not put it in a serious report. It is a sound-word: we made the spelling to copy a small dull pop or fizzle, the noise of something giving up. As a noun it is that noise itself. Though actually, people stretch it a little: not only engines, but anything mechanical that dies with a sad little sound.
