A philtre is a magic drink that is supposed to make someone fall in love. You will meet it in old stories, fairy tales, and fantasy, not in a real kitchen or a real pharmacy. It is a literary, slightly old-fashioned word; younger people are more likely to say love potion. Philtre is the British spelling; American books often write philter. Though actually, nobody is pouring this in ordinary life — it belongs to witches, old plots, and playful writing. It is not a medical drink and it is not a filter for water, even though it can look and sound close to filter on the page. The tone is storybook, not scientific.
