Philistinism is the attitude or habit of people who do not like or understand art, literature, music, and so on — or who look down on those things as a waste of time. It names the outlook, not the person. (The person is a philistine; philistinism is what they show.) You meet it in fairly formal or critical writing: someone might complain of ‘the philistinism of the age’ when they feel a whole culture has gone cheap and anti-art. It is not a street word; in ordinary talk you would just say they have no taste, or they don’t care about art. It is simply philistine plus -, the usual ending for an attitude or practice.
