1. 1

PGCE stands for Postgraduate Certificate in Education. In England, Wales, and some places that follow that system, it is the course you take after you already have a university degree if you want to become a school teacher. You study how to teach, you practise in real classrooms, and you are assessed. It usually lasts about a year full-time. It is not a second full degree and it is not a master's by itself — though some courses can be joined to one. It is a practical teaching ticket on top of the subject you already studied (history, maths, French, and so on). You will see it on UK job and university pages. Other countries train teachers in other ways, so a PGCE is a British-style qualification, not a world passport. Scotland's close cousin has a different set of letters.
