Pewter is a grey metal, traditionally made by mixing tin with lead. It is not as bright as silver and not as yellow as gold; it looks quietly grey, a little dull until you polish it. For hundreds of years people made plates, mugs, beer cups, and candlesticks from it, because it was cheaper than silver and easy to shape. Though actually, a lot of modern pewter is made without lead — tin mixed with other metals instead — because lead is poisonous, especially in cups and dishes. Old pewter can still have lead in it, so you should not eat or drink from antiques unless you know they are safe. People also use pewter for the colour: a pewter sky is that same soft grey.
組成From Middle English peutre, from Old French peautre, from Vulgar Latin *peltrum. The deeper origin is uncertain. It is possibly related to spelter, but that is not sure.
