A petunia is a garden plant grown for its flowers. The blooms are shaped like a little trumpet, wide at the open end, and they are pink, purple, or white — though garden shops now sell many other colours and stripes as well. Though actually, the name has a curious past: it comes, through French, from an old Tupi word for tobacco. Petunias and tobacco are related plants. A petunia is the pretty cousin you hang outside the window, not something anyone smokes.
