When someone acts pettishly, they show a small, sulky temper — the way a child does when they do not get their way. They snap, they pout, they push the thing away. The feeling is real, but it is not big anger; it is mixed with hurt pride, usually over something small. The word is a little old-fashioned now. You will meet it more in stories than in everyday talk. People still understand it, but they are more likely to say someone spoke “in a huff,” or to use petulantly instead. It is not a kind word, though it is not a very strong one either. It paints the person as easily put out, a bit childish, rather than seriously furious.
