A petrolhead is someone who loves cars, especially fast, loud, powerful ones — engines, racing, the whole culture around them. It is informal British and Australian English, often said with a smile or a little tease, not as a job title. Though actually, you would not put it in a stiff report; a newspaper might use it lightly. American speakers more often say gearhead or car nut. The petrol half is the British word for car fuel; -head here means “a person whose head is full of that thing.”
