Petrarch (1304–1374) was an Italian poet; in his own language his name was Francesco Petrarca. He is best known for a book of poems called the Canzoniere — hundreds of pieces, many of them sonnets, about his love for a woman he names Laura. We are not even sure who Laura was; that uncertainty is part of the story people tell. Later writers treated him as a father of Renaissance humanism: he loved old Roman books, and he wrote in both Latin and Italian. English poets borrowed his sonnet shape (the Petrarchan sonnet: eight lines, then a turn into six). Though actually, students who meet him only as “the man who loved Laura” miss that he was also a scholar and letter-writer, not only a love poet.
