Petra is an ancient city in the south of Jordan. The people who built it, the Nabataeans, cut tombs, halls, and a famous front wall — often called the Treasury — straight into pink and red rock. That is why writers call it the rose-red city. Visitors walk through a long, narrow stone corridor called the Siq, and then the building appears. It was once a rich trading city, later forgotten by much of the outside world, and it is now one of the best-known sights in the Middle East. The old English line “a rose-red city, half as old as time” is from a poem; it is a pretty , not a date. Though actually, Petra is also a woman’s name in some countries, from the same old word for “rock” as Peter — but this entry is the city. The two meet only in the stone.
