A petal is one of the soft, usually coloured parts of a flower that sit around the centre, often shaped a little like a leaf. Roses, lilies, and cherry blossom show their petals clearly; many grass flowers almost hide them. We count them (a six-petal flower) and we talk about them falling on the ground. People also stretch the word a little: a skirt that “opens like petals” is using the picture, not the garden. The everyday meaning is still the flower part, and it is not a formal word — children learn it early. Though actually, the small green pieces under many flowers are , not petals, and the whole head of the flower is the blossom; petals are only those coloured “leaves” of it. There is almost no verb use in ordinary English.
組成A learned borrowing from Ancient Greek πέταλον (pétalon), a thin, broad leaf or plate, from πέταλος (pétalos, “broad, flat”). That goes back to an old root meaning “to spread out.” (Far, far back, the same root also gave English fathom, but the two English words no longer look or feel related.)
