1. 1

A petaflop is a unit for how fast a computer can do hard number-work — the kind scientists call floating-point, which means sums with very big or very small numbers, not just counting apples. One petaflop means about one million billion of those operations every second (again, a 1 with 15 zeros). People say it about supercomputers, weather models, and the machines that train large AI systems, not about a home laptop. A laptop is many thousands of times slower. You will hear “a two-petaflop machine” or “so many petaflops.” Though actually, flop here is not the verb to flop (to fall down, or to fail). It is a short form of FLOPS: floating-point operations per second. Scientists write PFLOPS. And the number on the poster is a peak; real programs often run slower than the advertised petaflops.

  • 1

computingengineeringmathematicsEither of two units of measure of the calculating speed of a computer:

    • ...a better machine is a petaflop machine. A petaflop is a quadrillion flops, a quadrillion floating-point operations per second, so a petaflop machine is a thousand times as fast as a teraflop machine, or a million times as fast as a Cray Y-MP8. The petaflop machine will exist by the year 2000, or soon afterward.

    • First computer to surpass the 1 Petaflop (2⁵⁰ FLOPS) barrier [in 2008]
