The peseta was Spain’s money before the euro. For a long time, prices, , and pocket change in Spain were in pesetas; then Spain joined the euro, and the peseta stopped being everyday money. You meet it now in old stories, ’ memories, museum labels, and collector coins — not at the till. It is a Spanish word, from peso, a coin or a weight. It is not the money of Mexico or the Philippines; those are pesos, a different (though related) unit, and still in use.
