Person-to-person describes something that happens between one human being and another — not through a crowd, a company voice, or a machine speaking for you. A person-to-person talk is you and me. Shops talk about person-to-person selling when a real person explains a product to a customer. In the old telephone days, a person-to-person call was a special kind: the operator connected you only if a named person picked up, not just anyone in the house. That use is rare now, but the idea is the same: it has to reach that person. As a label it is a little formal; in everyday talk people more often say one-to-one or face-to-face. Though actually, it does not have to be in the same room — a phone call can still be person-to-person if it is one human to one human.
person-to-person 描述的是發生在一個人和另一個人之間的事，而不是透過群眾、公司的聲音，或機器替你說話。「a person-to-person talk」就是你和我之間的對談。店家會說「person-to-person selling」，指真人向客人解說商品。以前的電話也有「a person-to-person call」，接線生只有在指定的人接起電話時才會接通，家裡別人接起來不算。現在這種用法很少見，但概念相同：一定要找到那個人。
作為標籤，這個詞語氣略為正式；日常說話時，人們更常說 one-to-one 或 face-to-face。它不一定要面對面，只要是一個人對一個人，電話也可以是 person-to-person。
