Persia is the name English used for the country we now call Iran, from ancient times until the early twentieth century. In 1935 the government asked the world to say Iran instead, and that is the name you will see on maps today. Though actually, the older name never fully left: we still say the Persian Empire, Persian rugs, the Persian language, and the Persian Gulf. So Persia belongs to history and culture; Iran is the modern country’s name. Using Persia for the country today can sound old-fashioned, or a bit careless, as if the present place were only its past.

組成Borrowed from Latin Persia, literally “land of the Persians”: Persēs/Persa (“a Persian man”) + -ia (a suffix that builds country names). Latin took the people-name from Ancient Greek Πέρσης (Pérsēs), and that came from Old Persian pārsa.
