A perovskite is a kind of mineral: a crystal that holds metals in a special repeating pattern. The first one people named was built from calcium and titanium, which is why the Chinese name points at those two. Factories care because some of these materials move heat and electricity in useful ways. Though actually, scientists now use the word for a whole family of stuff that shares that same crystal shape, even when the metals inside are different — not only the original stone. In recent years the word also turns up in news about solar panels: a thin perovskite layer can help turn sunlight into power. So it began as one mineral, grew into a structure, and then into a technology. It has nothing to do with peroxide, even though the spellings sit near each other.
