Peritonitis is a serious medical condition: the thin inside wall of the abdomen — the lining that wraps the organs around and below your stomach — becomes infected and very painful. The belly can go hard, and the person is often very ill. It can follow a burst appendix or a hole in the gut. It is a hospital word, not a word for ordinary stomach , and doctors treat it as an emergency.
