A peristyle is a row of pillars that runs all the way around an open space in a building — or that open space itself, the court those pillars . You meet it in writing about old Greek and Roman houses and temples: a garden or yard with a covered walk of columns on every side. Architects still use the word for the same idea in later buildings. It is a specialist word, not everyday English. The “style” here is not fashion; it is the old word for a pillar.
