A pergola is a garden structure: upright posts holding up an open roof of crossing beams, with gaps between them, built so that climbing plants — grapes, roses, wisteria — can grow over the top and make a shaded or sitting place. The important detail is that the roof is open. It is not a roof that keeps rain off; the shade comes from the plants, or from the pattern of the beams themselves. That is what separates it from a 涼亭 or a pavilion, which has a solid roof and usually four walls or none but a real cover. English speakers use the word for the real thing in a garden or park, and also, loosely these days, for the wooden or aluminium frames people put over a patio or a café's outdoor seating, even when nothing grows on them. It is a normal, everyday word among people who garden or shop for houses; a person who never thinks about gardens may not know it. The plural is pergolas.
