A percentile is one of a hundred equal slices you can cut a group into. People use it when they compare scores, height, money, or health numbers. If your score is at the 80th percentile, you did better than about 80 out of 100 people in that group. It does not tell you that you got 80 percent of the questions right. Teachers, doctors, and reports like the word because it shows where you sit in the crowd, not only your raw mark. Francis Galton made the word in 1885 from percent plus a little ending that means “one of a set of slices.” Though actually, people mix it up with percent all the time, and the two are cousins, not twins: percent is a share of a whole, and a percentile is a place in a line of people.
