A perambulation is the walk itself: a slow walk around a place, often for pleasure. In older or legal English it can also mean walking around the edge of land to show where it ends. Same story as : formal, rare in speech, at home in books. People today would just say a walk or a stroll. Though actually, when you see it in an old law, it may not sound at all — it can be official work, a careful circuit of a boundary, not a Sunday outing.
