Pepperoni is a spicy, sausage, the one that sits in coins on a pizza. The taste is strong: smoked, a little hot, a little sweet from . In American English it is an everyday pizza topping, usually pork or a mix of pork and beef, dried and so it keeps. Though actually this is not what Italians mean by the look-alike word. In Italy, peperoni (different spelling) are sweet peppers — the vegetable. The American sausage borrowed the Italian plural for peppers, changed the spelling, and walked off with a new meaning. So English pepperoni is an Italian-American food word, not a menu item you should expect in Rome under that name. In Taiwan pizza shops people often just say pepperoni; they mean this sausage, not 青椒.
