    Penology is the study of prisons and of punishment — what a society does to people after they are found guilty, and why. It looks at prison life, other kinds of punishment, and whether those systems make the public safer or help people change. It is a formal, academic word. Criminology is a broader neighbour (crime in general); penology zooms in on punishment and the prison. Students sometimes mix it up with , which is about fossils, because both are long school-subject words. This one has nothing to do with pens or writing, and nothing to do with dinosaurs.
