Pennsylvania is a state in the north-east of the United States. It was one of the thirteen original states, and it mattered a great deal in the fight to leave Britain — the American Revolutionary War. Philadelphia, in this state, is where leaders signed the Declaration of Independence. For a long time Pennsylvania was known for coal and steel: mines in the hills, and huge steel works in cities such as Pittsburgh. That heavy industry is smaller now, but school books still often introduce the state that way. In writing Americans often it to PA. A person from there is a Pennsylvanian. The name is a place, not a person — though it does remember a person, William Penn.
組成Penn (William Penn) + sylvan (“woods”, from Latin silva) + -ia (“land”): “Penn’s wooded land”. In 1681 Charles II granted the land to Penn, who founded a colony there.
