Pennies is one plural of penny, the small coin. In the United States, a penny is the one-cent coin, and pennies is the only plural: I have three pennies. In Britain, a penny is one hundredth of a pound, and there are two plurals with different jobs. Pennies is for the coins you can hold and count as objects — a jar of pennies, three pennies in my hand. Pence is for the amount of money — this costs fifty pence, not fifty pennies, unless you really mean fifty separate coins. People still say save your pennies for keeping small coins, even when those coins are not worth much. Pennies can also stand, a little loosely, for a tiny bit of money in general. The coins themselves are often copper-coloured, which is why you hear pennies in the fountain and the like.
