Penitential means "about being sorry for a wrong" — the feeling, the look, or the time of that sorry mood. A penitential letter is a letter written in that spirit. Penitential prayers are prayers said because you know you did wrong. It is a church-and-book word, more formal than sorry. You may meet set names like the penitential psalms, a group of psalms used for saying you are sorry. Though actually, in church history it can also be a noun: a penitential was a handbook that told priests what a person should do to make up for a wrong. almost never need that noun. In ordinary life, people say sorry, ashamed, or they say they regret it. Use penitential when you want a serious, church-like tone, not when you knocked over a cup.
