Pendent means hanging from something — drooping or suspended, not standing up on its own. It is the same old 'hanging' word as pendant, but this spelling was later tidied to look more like Latin. You will almost never hear it in casual talk; it lives in careful description (a pendent flower, a pendent lamp) and in some technical writing. Pendant kept the older French look and became the everyday necklace noun; pendent is mostly the adjective 'hanging'. Native writers hesitate over the two spellings, so students are not foolish if they do too. If you mean the jewel, write pendant. If you mean 'hanging down from', pendent is the rarer, choice — hanging would do in speech.
