A pelmet is a narrow strip of wood, board, or cloth fitted along the top of a window. Its job is to hide the rod or rail that the curtains hang from, so the window looks tidy. It is mainly a British home-and-design word; American English more often says valance for the fabric kind. You will hear it in interior design, not in science class. Though actually, it is only that covering at the top — it is not the curtain itself, and a random shelf over a window is not automatically a pelmet. The origin is unsure; it may be a changed form of French palmette, a little palm-leaf ornament used in decoration.
