    A pelican is a large water bird with a huge and a deep bag of skin hanging under it. It fishes with that bag: it scoops up water and fish, lets the water run out, then swallows the fish. People like to say the bag is a store-cupboard, though actually it works more like a net than a — the bird is not usually walking around with a packed meal for later. You see pelicans by coasts, lakes, and rivers in many warm and mild places. The word is just the bird. In Britain a “pelican crossing” is a pedestrian light; that name plays with letters, and is not a fact about the bird.
