Pelagic is for things that belong to the open sea, far from land. A pelagic fish lives out in that wide water, not along the beach and not on the sea floor. Scientists use it for the water column itself — the sea as water, from the surface right down — as long as they are not talking about the coast or the bottom. Though actually, books often gloss it as “deep-sea,” and that can : a tuna racing near the surface in mid-ocean is pelagic even though it is not in the dark deep. The deep layers have their own pelagic names, but the core idea is “of the open sea,” not “of the trench.” It is a biology and ocean word, not everyday chat. You also hear it as a noun for those open-ocean animals.
