In ancient Greek and Roman stories, Pegasus is a horse with wings. He is not a normal horse that learned to fly. The stories say he sprang from the blood of when the hero killed her. Later, the hero Bellerophon rides him. Poets also tell that Pegasus's hoof struck a mountain and a spring of water came out — a spring tied to poetry and the Muses. That is why artists still use Pegasus as a picture of imagination, not only as 'a flying horse'. People also gave the name to a group of stars, but this entry is the story-horse. The name came into English in the 1300s, from Latin Pēgasus, from Greek Pēgasos. long tied it to a Greek word for a spring or fountain (pēgē), because of those fountain stories and the springs of Ocean. Though actually, some language scholars say that may be a folk tale about the name, and the ending -asos looks as if it could be older than Greek. So we can be sure of the horse; the 'spring' link is the traditional story, not a sure fact.
