    A peewit is a bird — the same bird many English books call a lapwing. It lives in fields and wet countryside, mostly in Europe, with a little crest on its head and a tumbling flight. People named it peewit because of the cry it makes: a high, two-beat 'pee-wit, pee-wit'. You may also see the spelling pewit; it is the same bird. This is not a city word in Taiwan, and it is not a toy sound you say to copy a bird. It is a real name, used in British English, nature writing, and older stories. Though actually, if you only remember 'a kind of countryside bird whose name sounds like its call', you already have the useful core.
