Peer-to-peer describes a computer system where the machines talk to each other as equals. There is no one main computer — a server — that all the others must obey. Each machine can share files or work with the others directly. IT people it to P2P. The use meet first is file-sharing: songs, films, or software moving from one person’s computer to another. News and finance also talk about peer-to-peer lending: people lending money to people, with no bank sitting in the middle. It is technical language that leaked into ordinary news. Though actually, peer here does not mean “look”. A peer is someone of the same rank. The computers are peers: none is the boss. People stretch it to any setup where equals deal with equals, not only computers.
