Peekaboo is a little game for babies and very young children. You hide your face with your hands or a cloth, then show it again and say “peekaboo!” The child laughs because you “went away” and came back. The word is also what you call out during the game. It is warm nursery language — a parent or playing on the sofa, not a school word. Though actually, peekaboo is also used for clothes with holes or gaps that let you see the skin underneath, as in a peekaboo dress. That use is fashion, not babies, but it is the same idea of something hiding and then showing.
