A pediment is the wide, three-sided shape that sits over the front of a building, above the door or above a row of columns. Picture a triangle lying on its long side. You see it a lot on old Greek temples, and later on banks, museums, and grand houses that copied that look. Builders also put a smaller pediment over a window. It is an architecture word: you will meet it in books about buildings more than at the dinner table. Though actually, not every pediment is a perfect pointed triangle — some are broken in the middle on purpose, and some are gently curved — but the simple Greek one is the picture most people have.
組成From an older form peremint, perhaps a dialect change of pyramid, with -ment added. That “perhaps” matters: we are not sure.
