A pecan is a long, thin nut with a smooth dark-red or reddish-brown shell; inside, the meat is rich, buttery, and a little sweet. The same word names the tall tree the nuts grow on, originally in North America. You meet pecans in pies, cookies, ice cream, and salads. English speakers do not agree how to say it: many say pi-KAHN (weight on the second part), and many others say PEE-can. Both are widely used; neither is a mistake. It is in the same broad family of trees as the walnut, but it is not the same nut — pecans are usually longer and milder.

組成Borrowed from French pacane, and at first spelled paccan in English. The French word comes from an Algonquian language of North America, perhaps Miami (Illinois) pakani. Sister words in other Algonquian languages mean 'hard nut' or simply 'nut'.
